the Gorringe group

The Gorringe group of allotments is made up of three sites joined together; Gorringe Road site in the centre, Tutt’s Barn Nursery to the north west, and Summerdale Nursery to the south east.  The site is accessed via the main gate in Gorringe Road next to the allotment office.  There is also an electric gate for the use of our less-abled tenants.  This is our largest site with 435 plots in total.

Facilities

Gorringe Road is not only the home of the allotment office but also The Potting shed – our shop staffed by volunteers.  The shop is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 12 midday.  From February to the end of October it is also open on Sunday mornings.  The shop is open to tenants and non-tenants supplying all your gardening needs.

A defibrillator can be found outside the office by the main gate.  This is for public use and will talk you through step by step.

There are a total of 18 raised beds available; 13 on the Gorringe Road site, 5 on the Tutts Barn Nursery site.  Plans are in the pipeline to increase these due to popular demand.

A toilet with facilities for the disabled can be found behind The Potting Shed near the main gate.  A second toilet can be found in the heart of the Summerdale Nursery site.

Soil type

Much of the surrounding low-lying area is marshland.  The soil parent material is alluvium: clay, silts, sand and gravel, with a soil texture of peaty clay.  Although fairly free-draining, this does cause some areas of the site to become waterlogged in very wet winters.

Parking

There are car parks situated around the site.  Do not park on the site roadways.  Please be considerate to other site users when loading/unloading outside of your plot.

DANGER – Please be aware that there are numerous drainage ditches throughout running alongside the site roads.  Children must be monitored at all times.
