Being green is a big part of allotments. Growing your own helps reduce food miles and waste, whilst increasing the biodiversity of our environment. We encourage tenants to leave space to encourage beneficial insects and birds, compost green waste and plant nectar rich plants for the bees. Many tenants grow organically or use no-dig methods.
In our shop and office we also like to do our bit. We are moving over to LED lighting to reduce our lighting costs and have installed energy efficient heaters. We have bins for all our compostable waste and recycle wherever possible. In our shop we operate a deposit scheme on our refillable liquid feed bottles and use carbon neutral 100% recyclable bags for our fertilisers or paper bags where appropriate. Our second-hand tool shop also encourages tenants to reduce, reuse, recycle.
