What to do in JANUARY

Although January is dark and cold there's still always something to do on the allotment in preparation for the year ahead

  • cover rhubarb to bring on forced stems

  • if you haven't already done it, prune roses whilst still dormant

  • prepare the ground for early peas by covering ground to warm it up

  • start pruning apples, pear, currants, and gooseberries (but leave cherries, plums and peaches until later in the year)

  • sow Sweet Peas and hardy annuals such as Cerinthe, Calendula, Nigella and Antirrhinums

  • sow leeks, onions, broad beans and spinach under cover

and of course, don't forget to get your seed order in!
